Folkmore Application

❥ Character Information
Character Name: "Dabi" or Touya Todoroki
Character Age: 23
Character Species: human
Current Health: not great, bob, the only reason he's not dead is because he's held together with stubborness and staples.
Outfit: momma told you not to shop at hot topic now see what's happened?

Character Canon: My Hero Academia
Link to History: here.

Canon Point: Sometime between chapters 191 (fighting Endeavor and Hawks after setting a Nomu loose on a bridge) and chapter 218 (when the League of Villains starts to take down the Paranormal Liberation Front and folds them into their cause).
Canon Iteration: canon alternate
Canon Iteration Explanation:
All for One is crazy. Even canon Dabi acknowledges this. But, who cares - he's going to die anyway, right? So long as he can make Endeavor suffer in the process.

This version of Dabi, however, is frustrated. All for One is fucking nuts and is using him, and he's no closer to taking down Endeavor. On top of that, through his research to put together his epic Call Out Post for Endeavor - he's suspecting that his baby brother isn't a copy of Endeavor, but a copy of him. This version of Dabi feels a quiver of empathy.

And fear. What if he's actually turning into his father? Fuck this. He's - going to figure out how to kill Endeavor on his own. He doesn't need All for One.

The League can manage without him. Just. It's fine. It's all fine. Fuck this.

❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes

Skills:
  • Tactical Training: once upon a time, Touya was trained to be the very best, like no one ever was.

  • Only Sane Man: since he wasn't as crazy as the rest of the League, while he wasn't ever technically in charge - he ended up being the defacto wrangler of random members and Nomu as the only adult in the room.

  • Callout Post Author: he's very intelligent and he's had a lot of time on his hands, he is able to do a lot of research and digging.

  • Stay On Target: as single-minded and vengeful as Dabi is, he's also very patient ... he's been waiting for a long time to take Endeavor down, he feels.

  • Street Smarts: instead of being to an actual school, Touya was taught at home by his father and then learned the rest of his life lessons on the streets.

  • Nerve Damage: with all of the burns, Dabi now has a difficulty feeling pain - which does have its advantages (as it has its disadvantages).

  • Raw Willpower: as stubborn as his father and his brother, Dabi will push past any pain he does feel, any difficulty, any weakness to achieve his goals.

  • Eideic Memory: the manga and anime show Dabi memorize and copying other moves that he sees Endeavor and Shoto perform, despite having none of the same training or time spent mastering those moves. While one could argue he might've practiced Endeavor's skills for years, this is most clearly shown when he copied Shoto's "Phosphor" move after seeing it once - a move it took Shoto months of training to come up with. This is not something Dabi has done at the present point in canon, but he is capable of doing so in the future.

Canon Abilities:
Dabi's quirk is referred to as 'Blueflame'.

Originally orange and red, Dabi is able to create blue fire of incredible heat, and create these flames in a extremely large area. He can unleash this fire at a great distance to himself, and the destructive power of this fire can become even more intense given his feelings at the time.

However, Dabi's body is not compatible with his quirk - he has a tolerance to cold instead. Using his fire for a prolonged period burns him, and if the flames are surrounding him he will be damaged by the heat and flame like any person without a fire-quirk.

Without the fox's intervention in taking him to Folkmore, Dabi wouldn't have had that much longer to live with all of the damage from the burns, infections, and the stress on his internal organs. He's still going out of sheer stubbornness.

Role: Familiar

Role Qualities/Attributes:

Dabi's Familiar form is a white snow-lynx, who is as badly burnt as Dabi is as a human. In his humanoid form, two white cat ears stick out of his hair - one fluffy and white, the other badly scarred from burning. Under his hair, they'll look stapled onto his head. Like a lynx, Dabi is already good at sneaking around silently and observing when it suits him. He'll take to using this form to quietly lurk around when he doesn't want to attract attention.

Role Reasoning:
If Dabi was all for the ideals to take down corrupt heroes and show the rot in their society - he'd be a shoe-in for a Myth. But that's not where his energies lie. In the end, he just wants to make Endeavor suffer.

Despite how often he's been burned and should just ignore the rest of the League, he spends too much of his time babysitting them to seem honest about his apathy. He kills too many try-hards who don't actually believe in Stain's ideals to be apathetic towards the League's supposed vision. And this version of Dabi is beginning to recognize enough shreds of empathy left inside of him to realize that he doesn't just want the entire world to burn for existing.

He's not willing to commit in any one direction, except for his own goals: he's focused on the fact he's been abused and neglected by a person - a whole society - that should've protected him as a child instead. Dabi is very much a neglected Familiar, a kicked-down support character, who has shown his fangs and claws after being pushed too far over the edge.

I hope he can heal enough to trust and bond someday.

❥ Personality

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

Option 2 questions (4-5). 100-300 word limit each:
❥ What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?

Dabi is not Shirigaki. He's got the hottest, most destructive fire quirk we see in the series, but he doesn't have a few chapters where he loses it and just burns down a bunch of blocks in a temper tantrum. Even in an attack, the most he seems to do is unleash it in a forest to split up the attacking forces to confuse and disorganize the enemy.

So, who does Dabi burn - who has he murdered? Because he has quite the body count. On panel/screen, this seems to fall into two categories - villains and criminals who are trying to get into the League of Villains, and anyone who gets caught in the blast while he's attacking heroes. Oh wait, there's one more category ...

He also burns down Toga's family home after she tearfully learned her family threw away all of her stuff. He played it off as not a big deal, pretending to be apathetic about it - but my headcanon is, based on all of this evidence, is that Dabi has a moral code. He's not only out to make Endeavor suffer and he doesn't just want to see the world burn.

See the next answer for details on what that is, but I think it benefits his story in one very crucial way. He's not All for One, and he doesn't just go along with what the League wants. He's not heroic, certainly, but he's not as cold-hearted as he perhaps wants to seem. It continues with the theme that he is a stubborn, highly driven individual - one who is fueled by his own passions, his own code, and his own agenda. The creepy assholes who resurrected him wanted to just use him - instead, he's using them for his own ends.

❥ What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?

Dabi hates hypocrisy more than anything else, that is certainly explicit in canon. What is more headcanon, but I think very well backed up, is that Dabi seems to also hate both heroes and villains alike - and that's directly linked to that theme of hating hypocrisy. Both of them claim to be doing one thing (whether that's saving people, or perhaps it's exposing the truth of how corrupt heroes are as they parrot Stain) but they're only acting toward their own ends.

He's got no qualms with killing the criminals and villains who are trying to join the League. Dabi calls them annoying, and I think this is partly true. They claim to be on board with the League's stated goals, but to him, they're just chasing clout and power so they can do whatever they want, hurt whoever they want. He has no sympathy for them.

Nor does he have any sympathy for heroes - people by and large who, if they're not exactly as terrible as his father, would shield and protect such a man's actions 'for the greater good.' Dabi can't stomach that excuse when he knows exactly how it feels to be a person harmed and ignored 'for the good' of society. I think that he reacted so violently to Hawks siding with the heroes and killing Twice for exactly that reason - it was the pragmatic choice, one taken under orders, but Twice was still a person who mostly desperately needed therapy and a support group. In warfare, good people die all of the time - but Dabi reasons like an individual, not like a soldier.

❥ What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise.

It's been noted that Dabi is incredibly patient and stubborn. These attributes serve him well, both just to plain keep on living - it's probably the only reason he's even alive; and to keep his mind - All for One said he wasn't a suitable candidate to be his vessel because his hate burns too strongly. He's willing to play the long game to get what he wants.

All that being said, Dabi still has a terrible temper. Once he doesn't hold back - Dabi isn't subtle. He will murder all those recruits that pissed him off. He will unleash every burning degree of heat in his fire on his dad. He will show a certain spy just how furious he is that he killed their friend.

That temper doesn't do him any favors. If he could dial back the heat a bit when he unleashes, maybe he'd have a lower body count. He'd certainly do less damage to his own body, stop accelerating his inevitable death at breakneck speeds. For that reason alone he should maybe chill a bit. It would be easier for him to circle back on a choice he's made earlier if he didn't burn every bridge when he finally judged it time to cross.

This is a weakness that the AU Dabi will still have, and might be forced to work on through trials.

❥ If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not?

At his most optimistic and idealistic, Dabi kind of imagines that many lives (specifically, his family's) would be a whole lot better if his dad simply died. His goal is suffering right now, but he wouldn't use a time machine to go back and make his dad suffer more - he'd just kill him. Keep it simple.

Maybe he'd have stayed with his family as Touya. Maybe his mom wouldn't have become institutionalized - maybe she wouldn't have gone nuts and burned his baby brother. Maybe Shoto then wouldn't have been isolated from the rest of their family. Maybe they would've lived together happily as Fuyumi always wanted. And, hell, maybe other people's lives would've been improved, too, since it wasn't Endeavor doing the hero-work and saving for him. Someone would've stepped in his place - odds are, someone better. Can't be someone worse, he'd figure.

He doesn't think it could happen now. Touya is dead, and his family moved on from him. Dabi is not the same person he was, and doesn't want to be. But if he could back? Just get rid of the problem once and for all.

❥ What would your character sacrifice to get what they want or to reach their potential? What have they sacrificed already?

People will say he's willing to sacrifice his health and his life, considering his eventual fate in canon - but I'd disagree. Dabi is already dying. He sees that as a foregone conclusion, all of this is just living on borrowed time.

It's more accurate to say that Dabi's willing to sacrifice his humanity. He has principles, people do offend them by being hypocritical pieces of shit or by abusing their position of power, he is loyal to his friends (even if he won't admit it), and he does care about what his family thinks of him (or this all wouldn't be so personal).

But he has sacrificed what he'd been raised to see as the markers of a decent human person. He's no hero, even in an ideal world where there were real heroes. He'll murder people, he'll watch the world burn, he'll become as worthless as the corpse he looks like if it means one person suffers.

However, given what he has already sacrificed - given what we see of him in his last moments of the fight - he's not completely gone, and there are bits of his humanity left. This AU will explore that, and may mean he's willing to sacrifice less the more human connections he makes with others.

❥ Permissions

OOC opt-outs: The only thing I don't want to play out with Dabi is some kind of arc where he eventually decides to unconditionally forgive his dad. Maybe he decides arson isn't the answer, that murder isn't okay, that he's happy to make his dad suffer by living his best life instead. But I'm not going to have him forgive him.
IC opt-outs: I'll throw Dabi into just about any situation except above.
Content warnings related to the character: Possible spousal rape, partner abuse, child abuse, child neglect, child emotional abuse and neglect, gaslighting, manipulation by authority figures, medical neglect, homelessness, cover-ups by authority figures, fantastic racism (category of persons who don't exist in RL), sexism, ableism, body horror, medical trauma, chronic illness, aaaand arson.
Sensitive subjects related to the character: Dabi will talk about his dad's abuse at the drop of a hat, and definitely react strongly to others talking about child or spousal abuse, hypocricy of those in power, and people getting judged from birth by stuff they can't control (ranging from flavors of racism to sexism to homophobia to just having terrible parents).
